Healthy Growing, Healthy Eating

Healthy Growing and Nutrition

The first component to healthy urban living is having access to healthy meals and preparing the meals in a healthy manner. RMRI will not only assist our participants in growing their own fresh vegetables, but also provided them with the opportunity to use their harvest as an economic driver. Participants will also learn to prepare meals in a healthier manner.

RMRSI Grows

RMRSI will partner with the 3 X 3 Project, a non profit urban growing organization, to provide families from the Castleberry Hill, West End, English Ave. and Vine City neighbors with an opportunity to not only grow fresh vegetables for themselves, but also gain revenue by selling their vegetables to local restaurants.

Participants will be provided with all materials and hands on training to grow fresh vegetables at the John Hope Community Center. Participants and food growth will be monitored by food growth professionals to ensure quality. Participants have the option to have their harvest purchased by the 3 X 3 Project and subsequently sold to local restaurants. Therefore participants have the option to earn revenue while also having consistent access to fresh vegetables.

Lastly, each quarter we will host “Castleberry Market” where a percentage of the harvest will be sold in the community. This will not only allow community access to fresh vegetables at low rates, but also promote healthy eating amongst community members.

Eating Healthy, Being Healthy

RMRSI will partner with the Georgia Extension Program to host 8 week cycles of nutrition workshops geared toward purchasing and preparing food in a healthy manner. These class will focus on areas such as:

  • Understanding food labels

  • Alternative ways of cooking your favorite meals

  • Starting new family food traditions

  • Healthy snacks for your children

  •

Along with curriculum instruction, each class will also have cooking demonstrations that participants can not only sample, but also take home to their family. This way the entire family can be exposed to eating healthy.
