RMRSI Healthy Urban Living Program

Traditionally low income families living in urban settings have been categorized as physically unhealthy due to a variety of reasons including unhealthy diet, lack of consistent physical activity, and lack of access to affordable healthcare. According to 2010’s Georgia State Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity Profile 64.8% of adults in Georgia were overweight with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater, only 29% of adults reported having consumed fruits at the recommended level of 2 or more times per day and 25% of Georgia’s adults reported that during the past month, they had not participated in any physical activity.

While we seek to change health and wellness lifestyles in adults, we also seek to implement healthy traditions that will impact youth and adolescents. 2010’s Georgia State Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity Profile found that of Georgia’s adolescent population 12% were categorized as obese, 89.2% consumed vegetables less than 3 times per day, 17.6% did not participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity on any day and 39.2% watched television 3 or more hours per day.
